The NMC in the UK requires all international candidates provide proof of English competency, usually IELTS Academic or OET certificate.

Effective communication is important between NHS staff members and patients, and miscommunication in the medical field should be avoided at all costs, to ensure patient safety and well-being.

Although the English level required may seem difficult, there are many resources on the web to help you study your English, or learn how to improve your chances of passing the test.

Also, candidates who apply with NEU Professionals and are accepted will be offered access to our library of study materials and support from our friendly recruitment consultants, which can also help improve your chances of passing your English exam.

Even if English is one of the official languages of your country, you may still not be exempt and will have to take either the IELTS Academic or OET exam. This list is based on countries where “majority spoken” is English, not “official languages” include English.

The NMC has a list of countries they have designated as “majority English speaking” which are exempt from the NMC requirement to provide proof of English competency. For more details, please see the NMC’s English Requirements website.
