Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) is a world renowned centre of clinical excellence and one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the UK.
The Trust is made up of four hospitals – the John Radcliffe Hospital (which includes the Children’s Hospital, West Wing, Eye Hospital, Heart Centre and Women’s Centre), the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, all located in Oxford, and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury, north Oxfordshire.
We provide a wide range of clinical services, specialist services (including cardiac, cancer, musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation) medical education, training and research.
Most services are provided in our hospitals, but over six percent are delivered from 44 other locations across the region, and some in patients’ homes.
In 2013/14 we provided care through:
- 650,000 outpatient appointments in the Trust’s hospitals
- 107,000 planned admissions
- 90,000 emergency admissions
- 130,000 Emergency Department attendances
We also delivered nearly 9,000 babies.
We employ nearly 11,500 people (including 3,600 nurses and 1,800 doctors) and our total income in 2013/14 was £879 million.
Our collaboration with the University of Oxford underpins the quality of the care that is provided to patients, from the delivery of high-quality research, bringing innovation from the laboratory bench to the bedside, to the delivery of high-quality education and training of doctors.
Existing collaborations include the ambitious research programmes established through the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), located on the John Radcliffe Hospital site and at the Biomedical Research Unit in musculoskeletal disease at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. These set the standard in translating science and research into new and better NHS clinical care.
We are keen to support our staff in both their personal and professional development. To do this we have a range of opportunities available to all staff in addition to the statutory training that is required by law. Our Learning and Development Department enables staff to manage their own learning and provides a wide range of activities, including e-learning, to help them improve their skills. We value vocational learning as much as academic learning and encourage our staff to share their knowledge with others. We believe that all staff should have equal access to education opportunities so that they can meet the learning objectives set out in their annual learning and development plan.

The annual OUH Staff Recognition Awards took place at Blenheim Palace on Thursday 28 November 2013, and marked the outstanding achievements, hard work and dedication shown by our staff every day of the year.
The awards celebrated the amazing people who work here and the contribution that they make. They also provided a fantastic opportunity for us to show the great work going on at the Trust and out in the community.
Almost 500 nominations were received from staff for these awards and all of the nominations were carefully considered by a panel. The event recognised and celebrated achievements in seven internal categories plus the Oxford Mail Hospital Heroes awards.
