Requirements
- Minimum one year of recent practice as a Registered Nurse (in a hospital or community),
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, or equivalent,
- Candidates from Non-English speaking countries (where English is not the official language) must show proof of English language proficiency in line with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (OET at a minimum score of 350 for each band or Academic IELTS at a minimum score of 7 in each band, overall 7.5 – for more information please click here)
Application Process – Nursing Candidates from English speaking countries
Countries where English is an official language (i.e. US, Canada, UK, Ireland)
- First apply to CGFNS – US based company, cost is $300 US, takes approx 30 days. All international nurses are assessed this way.
- Then apply to NZNC – $485 NZ
- Fit2Work Criminal record check $159 AUS ($172 NZ approx)
- Some candidates will need OSCE prior to application for Annual Practice Certificate (previously CAP if applied prior to 4th of December, 2023). This is to be paid for by the candidate, and taken in NZ. The cost is:
- IQN Theoretical exam online prior to departure (similar to CBT) with Pearson Vue – $140 NZ
- OSCE training course – $500 NZ
- OSCE exam – $3,000 NZ
- Costs related to OSCE are to be born by the candidate, including flight to NZ, and accommodation. Candidates can complete this course on a Visitor Visa.
- Visitor visa – $246 NZ
- APC – $130 NZ
- Travel to New Zealand ✈️
Registration must be completed, and a job offer received prior to being able to apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa.
For candidates who need OSCE, they may not get an interview until they have passed this, or at least booked it. If they are successful, only then can the start the work visa application, currently taking around 7 weeks.
Application Process – Nursing Candidates from non-English speaking countries

- IELTS – overall 7.5, minimum of 7.0 in each subtest.
- OET – must have minimum B in each subtest.
- Then apply to NZNC – $485 NZ

- Some candidates will need OSCE prior to application for Annual Practice Certificate (previously CAP if applied prior to 4th of December, 2023). This is to be paid for by the candidate, and taken in NZ. The cost is:
