Requirements

  • Minimum one year of recent practice as a Registered Midwife (in a hospital or community),
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery, or equivalent,
  • Candidates from Non-English speaking countries (where English is not the official language) must show proof of English language proficiency in line with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand (OET at a minimum score of 350 for each band or Academic IELTS at a minimum score of 7 in each band, overall 7.5 – for more information please click here)

Midwifery in New Zealand works in partnership with the woman and her whānau throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the first six weeks post-birth.

Midwives play a vital role in New Zealand’s health care. They are at the birth of every baby in Aotearoa New Zealand – in homes, in primary maternity units; in hospitals. Walking alongside women, partners and whānau, on their journey through pregnancy to parenthood.

The care from midwives in New Zealand is predominately provided by community-based midwives practising a continuity of care model. This is supported by employed midwives working in primary, secondary and tertiary maternity facilities.

Application Process – Midwifery Candidates from English speaking countries

Countries where English is an official language (i.e. US, Canada, UK, Ireland)

  1. Academic Requirements (before application):
    • Bachelor’s in Midwifery or other Midwifery qualifications that are equivalent in content to the New Zealand Bachelor of Midwifery for registration by the New Zealand graduate midwives.
  2. Work experience requirements (before application):
    • Minimum 1 year work experience post-registration in your country (internships not considered) required to register with the Midwifery Council of Aoteaora New Zealand (MCANZ). (Please note that the job requirements may vary and some Districts may require more years of working experience)
  3. Send your application to NEU Professionals – Online interview
  4. Reception of offer letter if successful at interview.
  5. Application of registration with the MCANZ (you may choose to start the registration process before interview. This will speed up the recruitment process):
    • Part A) Payment of 600 NZD to secure registration. Initial assessment that includes the review of your academic and professional experience.
    • Part B) Payment of 750 NZD – Other checks (such as police checks.
  6. Other registration details:

    • Approval of Registration with the MCANZ may take between:
      • 4 – 6 months approx. for US/Canada candidates.
      • 2 – 4 months approx. for UK/Ireland candidates.

    You can choose to pay the fees altogether or separately. We recommend that you pay separately as the fees are not refundable. By paying for Part A first you will be able to check that you fit all the requirements of the first part of the assessment and only pay 600NZD in the first instance. If you pay for the whole amount of 1350 NZD to start with without knowing if you will pass the first stage and you fail it, you will lose the full amount. Therefore paying in stages is a much safer way to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible. Countries where English is not an official language

  1. Academic Requirements (before application):
    • Bachelor’s in Midwifery or other Midwifery qualifications that are equivalent in content to the New Zealand Bachelor of Midwifery for registration by the New Zealand graduate midwives*
    • *Your degree must match the following characteristics:
      • Midwives must complete a minimum of 4800 hours over the programme of which a:
      • Minimum of 2400 hours must be in midwifery practice
      • Minimum of 1920 hours must be in midwifery theory.
    • This will be checked at the time of registration with the Midwifery Counciol of Aoteaora New Zealand (MCANZ)
  2. IELTS /OET certificate at the level required by the MCANZ (before application):
    • IELTS – overall 7.5, minimum of 7.0 in each subtest.
    • OET – must have minimum B in each subtest.
  3. Work experience requirements (before application):
