Depending on your situation, you may not be required to present an English language certificate when registering with the NMC. Before sending your application, check that you are exempt from this requirement or have other evidence to present. You may be exempt from showing proof of passing an English language test if:

You are a pre-registration nurse, midwife or nursing associate qualification taught and examined in English.
Recent practice of at least one year in a majority English-speaking country.

  • Minimum Band 6 NHS salary starting at £35,572 (this may be higher depending on experience and other qualifications). For more information about NHS pay rates please visit the following link.
  • Skilled-worker Visa with right to bring qualified dependent family members,
  • English language training and exam – sponsored by the Trust (first attempt only),
  • Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS),
  • Flight (cap between £600 and £850 depending on the NHS Trust),
  • General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) application fee (£106),

  • Minimum of 2 years experience working as a registered Pharmacist (academic internships not considered),

  • Proof of English Language – medium to advanced level: You need to have a good level of English prior to interview, this will be assessed using the “EnglishScore” app by the British Council. You will need a score or approximately 470+ (approx C1) to continue to interview. Your assigned recruitment consultant will also assess your spoken English during a video introductory call.
    • A good level of English is needed to register for the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). The GPhC requires you to pass an Academic IELTS with level 7 in all 4 subtests or a Pharmacy OET with Bs in all 4 subtests. In order to support you with this, the NHS Trust will fund the cost of an 8-12 week English training course and an exam (first attempt only). Please note that the course will not teach you vocabulary, it is to teach you how to pass the English exam.

Candidates who have already passed their English Language exam in line with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) will be prioritised. (Academic IELTS with level 7 in all four subtests or a Pharmacy OET with Bs in all four subtests)

  • Not essential to apply but highly desirable: General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) registration (NEU Professionals can offer free support with this for the right candidate). Candidates who have already completed GPhC registration will be prioritised.

English language training and exam sponsored by the NHS Trust!

A good level of English is needed to register for the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

In order to support you with this, the NHS Trust will fund the cost of an 8-12 week English training course and an exam (first attempt only).

Please note that the course will not teach you vocabulary, it is to teach you how to pass the English exam.You will need to have a good level of English prior to interview

Your level of English will be assessed once you’ve submitted your application (and prior interview) using the “EnglishScore” app by British Council.

You will need a score or approximately 470+ (approx C1) to continue to interview.

Your assigned Recruitment Consultant will also assess your spoken English during a video introductory call.

English Language Requirements for Pharmacists

Candidates who have already passed their English Language exam in line with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) will be prioritised.

The English language requirements for Pharmacist registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) are as follows:

  • IELTS Academic – Reading:7 / Listening: 7/ Speaking: 7 / Writing: 7
  • OET – Reading: B / Listening: B / Speaking: B / Writing: B

Candidates must achieve the specified scores in a single sitting of either one of the English language examinations mentioned above. Unlike the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements, candidates are not permitted to combine scores from multiple exams.

Application Process for European Economic Area (EEA) Candidates

16 weeks average time from interview to arrival in the UK

  1. Candidates are screened*
  2. Interview conducted by the Trust
  3. Conditional offer of employment
  4. OET Training course
  5. Pharmacy OET exam
  6. Complete GPhC form to have qualification recognised
  1. Qualification verified by GPhC
  2. Register with the GPhC as a pharmacist**
  3. Pre-employment checks
  4. Certificate of Sponsorship
  5. Skilled worker visa
  6. Arrival to UK

* For English level – using English score/needs analysis to ensure the English is at C1 level – 2) To asses they have completed all the education and training requirements to be eligible to register as a pharmacist in the country where they qualified.
