The role of a Pharmacist within the NHS

You’ll use your expert knowledge of medicines and health to make a positive difference to people’s lives and wellbeing. You’ll provide care in a range of settings, often at the heart of local communities. You’ll also have a role in preventing people from getting sick by helping them live healthier lifestyles and making sure they get the most from their medicines.

You’ll also work daily with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and healthcare scientists, using scientific evidence to deliver care in your local community.

Pharmacists’ unique expertise and knowledge makes them essential members of the healthcare team.

  6. OSPAP eligibility form to be sent to GPhC (£687 fee)
  7. Candidate applies to an university to complete the OSPAP course
  8. Pre-employment checks
  9. Certificate of Sponsorship
  10. Healthcare worker visa
  11. Arrival to the UK
  12. OSPAP course (1 year)
  13. Registration training placement
  14. Complete GPhC registration assessment
  15. Register with the GPhC as a pharmacist

  4. OET Training course
  5. Pharmacy OET exam
  6. Complete GPhC form to have qualification recognised
  7. Qualification verified by GPhC

Pharmacist English Language Requirements

The English language requirements for pharmacist registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) are as follows:

  • Academic IELTS – Reading:7 / Listening: 7/ Speaking: 7 / Writing: 7
  • OET – Reading: B / Listening: B / Speaking: B / Writing: B

Candidates must achieve the specified scores in a single sitting of one of the the English language examinations mentioned above. Unlike the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements, candidates are not permitted to combine scores from multiple exams.
